INNOMEM Presented at FILTECH 2026: From Membrane Innovation to Industrial Implementation

On 30 June 2026, INNOMEM coordinator Kristianne Tempelman-Bolt presented INNOMEM’s work during the FILTECH 2026 Conference in Cologne, Germany, in the session F01 – Sustainable Filter Elements and Media.

The presentation, entitled “Membrane Processes for Sustainable Separation: From Performance Potential to Industrial Implementation”, explored the role of membrane technologies in supporting more sustainable industrial separation processes. While membranes are widely recognized for their potential to reduce energy consumption, recover valuable resources, and contribute to circular process concepts, their successful implementation often requires more than membrane performance alone.

The presentation focused on three key themes:

  • Separation efficiency and energy reduction, highlighting the potential of membrane processes to reduce the energy footprint and process costs of industrial separations.
  • Resource recovery and circular processes, demonstrating how membranes can recover valuable components and enable reuse of industrial streams.
  • Membrane development towards industrial implementation, addressing the practical challenges associated with scale-up, validation, and deployment.

A central theme throughout the presentation was the importance of bridging the gap between promising laboratory results and industrial application. Through a selection of demonstration cases, the presentation illustrated how testing under realistic conditions, modelling, techno-economic evaluation, and pilot-scale validation can contribute to a more comprehensive assessment of membrane technologies.

As an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB), INNOMEM was established to support this transition by providing access to testing facilities, expertise, modelling tools, and scale-up capabilities through a single-entry-point approach.
